Did you know…?
The ocarina is one of humanity’s oldest musical companions. Archaeologists have found vessel flutes, ancestors of today’s ocarina, in ancient China, Mesoamerica, and Neolithic Europe, some dating back over 8,000 years.
They were played in rituals to honour wind, breath, and the spirit of nature, the very essence of life itself. 🌿
One of the oldest examples, the Runik Ocarina, was discovered in Kosovo and dates to around 6,000 BCE.
If you visit Italy, you can also explore the craft’s modern rebirth at the Museum of the Ocarina in Budrio, where the instrument’s 19th-century creator Giuseppe Donati first shaped the clay into the form we know today.
🪶 Fun fact: its name means “little goose” in Italian!
And yet, this tiny flute carries the echo of millennia, like a whisper from the earth itself. I personally love the sound and find it so soothing, gentle, and curious. I am very lucky and grateful : My friend offered me one recently, and of course…I had to play it right away! So, here’s my very first melody, played with joy, curiosity, and a little reverb for the magic !
